Review: Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins

Book: Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins

What if there were teens whose lives depended on being bad influences? This is life for sons and daughters of fallen angels in Sweet Evil.

Tenderhearted Southern girl, Anna Whitt, was born with the sixth sense to see and feel emotions of other people. She’s aware of a struggle within herself, an inexplicable pull toward danger, but it isn’t until she turns sixteen and meets the alluring Kaidan Rowe that she discovers her terrifying heritage, and her will-power is put to the test. He’s the boy your daddy warned you about. If only someone had warned Anna.

A cross-country trip to meet her father forces Anna to face the reality that hope and love are not options for her kind. When she confronts her destiny, will Anna embrace her halo or her horns?

At a glance, Sweet Evil seems like another young adult paranormal romance book. And to be honest, it is... but Sweet Evil is just so much more than that! It's completely amazing and I'm pretty sure this review will not do any justice to how much praise this book truly deserves.

Review: Die for Me by Amy Plum

Book: Die For Me by Amy Plum
Publisher: HarperTeen
Pages: 341
Source: Bought
Links: Goodreads | Amazon

In the City of Lights, two star-crossed lovers battle a fate that is destined to tear them apart again and again for eternity.

When Kate Mercier's parents die in a tragic car accident, she leaves her life--and memories--behind to live with her grandparents in Paris. For Kate, the only way to survive her pain is escaping into the world of books and Parisian art. Until she meets Vincent.

Mysterious, charming, and devastatingly handsome, Vincent threatens to melt the ice around Kate's guarded heart with just his smile. As she begins to fall in love with Vincent, Kate discovers that he's a revenant--an undead being whose fate forces him to sacrifice himself over and over again to save the lives of others. Vincent and those like him are bound in a centuries-old war against a group of evil revenants who exist only to murder and betray. Kate soon realizes that if she follows her heart, she may never be safe again.

Oh goodness gracious, I absolutely adored Die For Me! Where do I start?

Well first off, the characters! I really liked Kate. She's a reader, a lover of the arts, witty, just a fantastic heroine in all. I also liked how even when she was with Vincent, she didn't go gaga and still remained sensible in tough situations. She wasn't overbearingly whiny about her parent's death, and her grief over them seemed realistic and well-written. Jules is one of my favorite! Although just a bit rough in the beginning, he starts to sweeten up and just become so adorable.

Speaking of adorable, have I mentioned Vincent? He's absolutely amazing! He's everything you'd want in a boyfriend: sweet, protective, and caring. I love the interaction between the two. Even though it felt just a tiny bit rushed with hints of insta-love, their relationship is so cute and I'm hoping to see it develop into something even more greater!

Another thing I really enjoyed about Die For Me is the idea of revenants. It's a completely unique take on one of the paranormal genres (which I shall not spoil for anyone) and it's so interesting. I wished I could have seen a bit more of elaboration on the history of revenants, but I'll just have to hope to see more of it in the next book.

Although it started off a bit slow for me, the plot was engaging and left me breathless, especially towards the ending. It was completely action-packed and left me dying to know what was going to happen next. The ending was really sweet, and it wrapped up a lot of things. It didn't necessarily left me hanging with a cliffhanger but it did however left me dying for the next book. (Wow, my joke was so lame...)

In all, Die For Me is a thoroughly refreshing read with a fascinating take on something paranormal, wonderful characters that will grow on your heart, and a delectable forbidden romance, all set in the beautifully written Paris.

Cover Discovery! The Lost Prince by Julie Kagawa

Cover Discovery is a brand new feature here at Books to Infinity and Beyond. I like to showcase books I've recently discovered because of their awesome covers and summaries! These books can range from fairly new to yet to be published.

Book: The Lost Prince by Julie Kagawa
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Expected Publication: October 23rd 2012
Information found on: Goodreads

Set several years after the events of the first, this trilogy will star an older Ethan Chase, Meghan's brother.

Cover Thoughts:

Okay, I know it's a little early for a Cover Discovery this week and it's a partial cover discovery but GUYS. COME. ON. LOOK. AT. THAT. COVER. (Or...well...what you can see from it.) There's a super duper crazy hot guy on that cover. This YA cover transcends from the awesomeness of "girls in pretty dresses and fancy colors galore" covers. I was literally squealing when I first saw this. <33

EDIT (4/26): Just found the full cover reveal! Isn't it awesome?

Thoughts:

Ethan, what have you been doing? MHMM, I am so digging this. I absolutely cannot wait for this book to be released! Julie is probably one of the best authors EVER (in my opinion of course) and I just love her works. I cannot wait for the summary blurb and the cover release! ^___^

And if you guys have not read the prequel series, The Iron Fey, yet, I am very very ashamed of you. (I sound like a hypocrite because I haven't even finished the third book in the series LOL.) Read it now because it's amazing! It'll blow your socks off! :D You will fall over and over for Ash and his smexiness. Ahhh~ (But guys, he's mine. ;D You guys can have Puck though hehe.)

What do you guys think of The Lost Prince?

Review: Divergent by Veronica Roth

Book: Divergent by Veronica Roth
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books
Pages: 487
Source: Bought
Links: Goodreads | Amazon

In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue in which she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are and where exactly a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned that it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

Debut author Veronica Roth bursts onto the literary scene with the first book in the Divergent series: dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance.

Divergent, in one word, is phenomenal. An incredibly riveting read, I can happily say that I enjoyed this to the max!

I'm actually at a loss for words. This book was just that good. There were absolutely no flaws (well, for me at least) and everything was just perfect. Okay, I'll start off with the world-building.

Oh Veronica, Veronica, how I adore your world building skills! The different factions, the "perfect" society, everything was just so different! I can't recall ever reading something like this, and originality gets a huge A plus in my book. I also love how each of the factions each have their own distinct "personality" and each person in that faction strives to achieve those "personality" characteristics (which is through the Initiation ceremony). Although the idea may be simple, it's so much more than that. I can't explain it in words, if you haven't read, you'll just have to read and experience it for yourself.

The next thing to check off the list of awesome: Tris. Tris was awesome. Another bad-ass character (is this becoming a trend or just coincidence), she stands up for what's right and doesn't back down. She's brave and is level-headed, even when her whole world turns upside down. Of course she doesn't become (physically) bad-ass immediately, so she gets a little help from the swoon worthy, Mr. Four. Four is another well-written character, a crazy hot courageous man who's been through a lot before becoming the kind of person he is right now. He's kind and sweet towards Tris in his own ways, and the romance between the two is fantastic. There were many events that helped nurture their relationship and grow into a blossoming love, which I adore!

The plot was absolutely thrilling! Despite the slow start, it hits off into the action pretty soon and it only takes off even more from there. I loved the action scenes especially. Sometimes, I tend to find action scenes drag on a bit and then I end up skipping the whole darned thing. With Divergent, it kept me fully engaged with my thumb pressing "Next Page" on my Kindle like crazy! There were also so many surprises and shocks and I did not see any of them coming. This plot, in a word, was completely unpredictable for me, which I loved! I'm getting better at figuring out plot lines, but Divergent managed to keep me on my toes each page. The book wraps up with a great cliffhanger, with questions answered and other questions only left to be answered in Insurgent.

Exhilarating and breathtaking, Divergent captures the perfect image of what a good novel should be: a strong yet vulnerable heroine, magnificent world building, well-written characters, eye-widening twists, a flurry of gripping action scenes, and a beautiful slow-burning romance between two characters that will only capture your heart.

What speed do YOU read?

I saw this neat idea at Good Golly Miss Holly's lovely book blog and thought I might share this thing with you guys. :)

Have you ever wondered how fast you could read? I sure did! I was just looking about Holly's blog and I came across this interesting little post and couldn't help but take the quiz myself! ...And the results are in:

I read 550 words per minute, making me 120% faster than the national average.

That's honestly...a bit crazy lol. I used to be an incredibly slow reader before I started this book blog. Heck even a few months ago, I was a slow reader! I'm really glad that I can read faster now hehe. :)

If I maintained this reading speed, I could probably finish:

  • Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in 2 hours and 20 minutes
  • A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens in 4 hours and 6 minutes
  • Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll in 48 minutes
  • The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien in 14 hours and 30 minutes
I could also probably read 7 books on my Kindle Keyboard assuming the average book length is 136,604 words.

So, guys, go take the test for yourself! :D Click on the e-reader below and staart~ Be sure to come back here and leave your results in the comments. :) I want to know what you guys get!

Cover Discovery! A Shimmer of Angels by Lisa M. Basso

Cover Discovery is a brand new feature here at Books to Infinity and Beyond. I like to showcase books I've recently discovered because of their awesome covers and summaries! These books can range from fairly new to yet to be published.

Book: A Shimmer of Angels by Lisa M. Basso
Publisher: Month9Books, LLC
Expected Publication: November 20th 2012
Information found on: Goodreads

A compelling and spirited debut from Lisa M. Basso in which sixteen-year-old Rayna Evans has spent the last three years locked away in a mental institution for seeing angels. Intent on remaining free, she ignores signs that she may be slipping into the world she has tried so hard to climb out of. But when her hallucinations begin showing up at school, can Rayna keep her job, her sanity and keep students from dying at the hand of angels she can’t admit to seeing?

Psychiatry, fantasy and real life come together in A Shimmer of Angels, as a young girl struggles with identity, secrets and confronting her greatest fears. A Shimmer of Angels is a wonderful read for anyone who has ever felt like an outsider, or perhaps has felt like giving up entirely. It touches on themes of suicide, ostracism and emotional pain. The author, personally exposed to suicide through the death of her beloved brother, will donate a percentage of sales of this novel to a local suicide prevention and outreach program in San Francisco, California.

Cover Thoughts:

Usually I'm not the kind to gush over covers since I'm rather picky about what I like. This cover though...just gorgeous. The colors are lively and vibrant, the font is simple and clean, I love this cover so much!

Thoughts:

A Shimmer of Angels sounds really good as well. I've been looking for the right contemporary to get me back into the genre, and this sounds perfect! There also seems to be some paranormal/fantasy elements in it, but I'm not entirely sure if it'll be one of the main aspects of the book. I usually don't read books if they don't have any kind of romance in them, but I'm willing to make an exception for this one. :) And who knows? Maybe it'll have some romance ;D (A girl can only hope lol.)

What do you guys think of A Shimmer of Angels?

Review: Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Book: Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi
Publisher: Harper/HarperCollins
Pages: 352
Source: Bought
Links: Goodreads | Amazon

Juliette hasn't touched anyone in exactly 264 days.

The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette's touch is fatal. As long as she doesn't hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don't fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.

The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war-- and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she's exactly what they need right now.

Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.

In this electrifying debut, Tahereh Mafi presents a world as riveting as The Hunger Games and a superhero story as thrilling as The X-Men. Full of pulse-pounding romance, intoxicating villainy, and high-stakes choices, Shatter Me is a fresh and original dystopian novel—with a paranormal twist—that will leave readers anxiously awaiting its sequel.

Caution: Slight spoilers may be revealed in this review.

If Shatter Me was a meal it would be a delicious appetizer: exquisite and full of potential but unsatisfying since I'm left a lot hungry for more. Shatter Me is a great novel, and I honestly wished I could have liked it more but there were a bit too many issues for me.

In a future world, Vampires reign. Humans are blood cattle. And one girl will search for the key to save humanity.

Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.

Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them. The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked—and given the ultimate choice. Die… or become one of the monsters.

Faced with her own mortality, Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough without human blood, and you will go mad.

Then Allie is forced to flee into the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of humans who are seeking a legend—a possible cure to the disease that killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.

But it isn't easy to pass for human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside her. And Allie soon must decide what—and who—is worth dying for.

I was excited and completely nervous when I found out that Julie, the phenomenal writer of the Iron Fey series, was writing a vampire series. The Iron Fey series is pure fun and whimsy at its best from the enchanting Nevernever to the well-written and humorous characters. In case you haven't noticed, vampires are not fun and whimsy...at all. I had high expectations for this book and Julie didn't just reach them...she went over and beyond!

Quick thoughts about my mailbox and this week:

I've seen so much Insurgent fever everywhere that I was beginning to wonder what's the whole hype about Divergent. The summary didn't really catch my interest and the cover is a bit pretty but other than that, what's so special about it? After so many recommendations from others on Twitter, I bought the book and it's safe to say that I'm lalalaloving it so far! :)

I've only finished one book this week (which is bad bad bad! It's my last week of spring break, should have gotten more reading done...) and I loved it! Sweet Evil was just so fun. Review will be coming soon! In the meantime, you should check out my post below about seven deadly reasons why you should check out SE. :D

Seven Deadly Reasons Why YOU Should Read Sweet Evil

Okay, if you've been reading my tweets or following my Goodreads updates about my current reads, you should know how just recently I finished Sweet Evil and how I just ADORED it! ♥ It may come off as yet another YA paranormal romance book (and it is) but there's things that make it just so different and original from the rest! :)

SO, I've compiled a list of seven deadly reasons (and gifs and pics hehe) for all of my lovely followers as to why they should read this book!

13 April 2012

Feature & Follow Friday (04.13.12)

Q: What is one book that you would be nervous to see a movie adaption of because you think the movie could never live up to the book?

Honestly, I think I'd be a bit nervous for the TID series (Clockwork Angel, Clockwork Prince) to come to life in the theaters. It's such a wonderful series and I'd hate for it to be butchered on the big screen, only to have millions of fans watch it worldwide. Heck, I'm even a bit nervous for the upcoming movie, City of Bones! I have faith they'll do a good movie adaptation but only time will tell. x_x

How about you guys? ♥ Leave a comment below and I'll check out your blog!

Cover Discovery! Splintered by A.G. Howard

Book: Splintered by A.G. Howard
Publisher: Amulet Books
Expected Publication: January 2013
Information found on: Goodreads
For sixteen years, Alyssa Gardner has lived with the stigma of being descended from Alice Liddell -- the real life inspiration for Lewis Carroll's famed novel, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. But cruel jokes about dormice and tea parties can’t compare to the fact that Alyssa hears the whispers of bugs and flowers ... the same quirk which sent her mother to a mental institution years before.

When her mother takes a turn for the worse and the whispers grow too strong for Alyssa to bear, she seeks the origins of their family curse. A set of heirlooms and a moth tied to an unusual website lead Alyssa and her gorgeous best friend / secret crush, Jeb, down the rabbit hole into the real Wonderland, a place more twisted and eerie than Lewis Carroll ever let on.

There, creepy counterparts of the original fairytale crew reveal the purpose for Alyssa’s journey, and unless she fixes the things her great-great-great grandmother Alice put wrong, Wonderland will have her head.

Cover thoughts:
When I first saw this, I thought it was pretty and it'd be about a girl who had some crazy awesome nature powers. LOL now that I look back on it, I can definitely feel the Wonderland elements about it! I especially love the caption and title font! ♥ :)

-------

If you all know me, you know I lalalove any spins on Alice in Wonderland because...I just do! Alice in Wonderland is all fun and whimsy, I love the book and especially the movies! (The movie adaptation from Tim Burton is awesome, by the way.)

Speaking of Burton, this book sounds fairly reminiscent of the Burton adaption, in regards to Wonderland itself: Wonderland is a much darker place than it leads on to be. (AND. I. LOVE. THAT.) Like seriously.

Splintered also seems to have its fair share of romance and adventure (Ooh la la, Jeb, I'll be waiting for your arrival...), so I really really cannot wait for this book. However, when I found out it's going to be published in January 2013...

I was like this:

Then for a moment, I turned into something like this:

And now, I'm like this:

What do you guys think of Splintered? Awesome? Not your read?

In case you missed it, last week's Cover Discovery was Alice in Zombieland!
